Gowran Park Thoughts

All eyes will be on last year’s winner, Presenting Percy, who resides around the 7/4 mark having been 9/4 last night. Limini’s best hurdle FSF (February 2017) sees her on 166. PP is on 159 followed by Coquin Mans 154 and Bapaume 151 level with Darasso. Whereas as PP arrived a fit horse last year he returns from a  ten-month absence. He is entitled to come on a good deal for this run whatever the outcome.

Invitation Only looks on a workable handicap mark. He has a decent record going right-handed though it will be his first run in a field this size. General Principle and Mr Diablo are two to consider. The latter tops FSFs just ahead of Invitation Only. Pleasant Company and Alpha Des Obeaux are joint third top on FSFs.

At the start of the season, I was alerted to Cilaos Emery. Connections have always felt he would be a decent novice chaser. His last three runs over hurdles were at Grade One level, including a win over Melon. He suffered a setback early 2017 but is reported to be in good form. A taking performance here would see him emerging as an Arkle candidate. His latest Hurdle FSF would see him amongst the better novice chasers if repeated over fences.

116+ 8. UPGRADED A. J. Martin M. F. Mooney

115 12. THE CADDY N. Madden Niall Madden

Analyst’s Verdict:

Iknowwhereiamnow is threatening to come good in a handicap having shaped well again at Punchestown 11 days ago so she could be the answer in what is admittedly a very competitive contest. Last-time out winner Breesy Mountain may have more to offer, while there are several handicap debutants to keep an eye on, notably Upgraded and City Hall.

133 13. KALUM RIVER P. A. Fahy Mr P. W. Mullins

Analyst’s Verdict:

The Big Dog pulled clear with another good prospect at Leopardstown over Christmas and makes plenty of appeal with further improvement on the cards. Voix des Tiep is another promising novice hurdler for Willie Mullins and looks the clear danger.

166+ 4. PRESENTING PERCY Patrick G. Kelly Davy Russell

165 5. BLEU BERRY W. P. Mullins B. Hayes

Analyst’s Verdict:

Presenting Percy won this race 12 months ago prior to a brilliant display in the RSA Chase, and though he’s presumably suffered an interrupted preparation this time, he may well still be up to the task. Should he swerve this assignment or not give his running, Coquin Mans and Darasso are perhaps best equipped to take advantage.

138 13. SESKINANE Brian M. McMahon A. M. McCurtin

137 18. VENEZIANO SPRINGS Terence O’Brien D. J. McInerney

Analyst’s Verdict:

Getaday is on an upward curve and only found a promising recruit from points too good in a novice at Cork last time so, with a strong view taken of that form, he could be well capable of defying a mark of 109 even in what looks like quite a hot race. Hows Patsy deserves respect on the back of his ready success at Limerick and the in-form Veneziano Springs can’t be ignored.

169 18. MR DIABLO J. P. Dempsey L. P. Dempsey

169 21. NICK LOST Henry de Bromhead Reserve

Analyst’s Verdict:

Invitation Only boasts some strong form (third in a Grade 1 last season), so looks interesting now pitched into a handicap from a mark of 152, especially with a run under his belt. His stablemate Some Neck still has very few miles on the clock so may yet do better, with last year’s winner Monbeg Notorious also respected.

150p 11. MINISTERFORSPORT Noel O’Neill D. J. McInerney (3)

144 16. HIGH SCHOOL DAYS Henry de Bromhead Rachael Blackmore

Analyst’s Verdict:

Duc des Genievres was smart over hurdles and produced a promising first effort in this sphere when second at Naas 37 days ago, beaten only by one boasting chasing experience/ fitness edge. He can come out on top with improvement expected. Stablemate Cilaos Emery is of obvious interest also under Ruby Walsh, whilst Ministerforsport can also feature.

4.10 P. J. Foley Memorial I.N.H. Flat 2m

Analyst’s Verdict:

Blue Sari, Front View and Barnes des Mottes are a trio of interesting newcomers, with the first named just edging the vote before market clues.
