Ballydoyle’s Battalions line up with a five-horse assault on the final classic. I think it is fair to say Nelson and Zabriskie will be sacrificed as pacemakers while Southern France and The Pentagon look capable of running decent races in their own right. The former has it to do on form with Kew Gardens on Ascot form. However, he ran well in his prep-race and should narrow the gap. The Pentagon hints at a return to form without proving convincing. Loxley and Old Persian represent Godolphin. The former has, for me, plenty to prove both in this grade, and the ability to stay on breeding. Old Persian is both tough and consistent; recording his best FSF last time out. I harbour a slight doubt as to whether he will truly see this out. Dee Ex Bee has been busy this season. His sire is yet to get a true stayer while his dam, though unraced has ten/eleven-furlong breeding. Raymond Tusk is bred to stay though needs to improve. Time may show his second to Hamada is better than it looked at the time. Two fillies in the field in Maid Up and Lah Ti Dar. The former comes from a stable on fire. However, ratings suggest she needs to improve again to prove competitive at the business end. Lah Ti Dar returned from an enforced break to hose-up in a mile and half Listed race at York. Whilst her ability is not questioned, her breeding is worth a second look. Her dam was a top-class Group One mile and a half mile horse. Her sire, Dubawi, was a Group One winning miler that failed to stay a mile and a half in the Derby. His best offspring have raced over six to twelve-furlongs. Whilst Lah Ti Dar has a chance of seeing out the trip, it is not conclusive. Kew Gardens won over the trip at Ascot. I felt Mr Moore was far from hard on him in the Great Voltigeur where he carried a 5lb penalty. He showed a turn of foot in the Group One Grand Prix de Paris with his sire and dam top-class middle-distance performers. Since Lah Ti Dar was confirmed for the race, he has eased in the market. It will be interesting to see how the market develops in the run-up to the race. I do not intend to desert my long-term fancy in Kew Gardens and nominate Lah Ti Dar and Southern France as the main dangers.
